That according to California Labor and Workforce Agency estimates that by 2014, California will need 11,700 welders, data shows that while California companies need and want qualified workers, the United States is not preparing workers for the new economy. According to the most available data 30 percent of applicants have the wrong skills for available jobs(U.S Chamber of Commerce 2002) and more than 80 percent of manufacturer reported a shortage of qualified candidates( National Association of Manufacturers 2001).Unskilled service jobs dominate the local economy, almost 59% of business in the Coachella Valley don’t currently work with local school to help prepare students for the workforce and over 24,000 of these students will be in the workforce by 2010. Significant labor shortage already exist in the welding industry and as the economy and population grows and baby boomers retire, those skills will turn into a workforce crisis. |
